Okay, I just realized something. Maybe someone has pointed it out already.
Elena’s whole death scene, in a way, relies heavily on Damon’s reaction.
Elena’s death scene almost hinges on Damon’s reaction. In between the shots of Elena’s death, we have Alaric’s death. Damon…

Okay this is going to be short, but I just have to write something!
Elena not choosing Damon: I’m still optimistic and I believe that it might actually be a good thing that she didn’t choose him because this means that they’ll be endgame. If she would have chosen Damon now she would have gone back to Stefan eventually. But if she chooses him later on it’ll be because she’s sure of what she wants and I’m pretty sure it’ll be her final decision. I still believe that she’s confused right now.
The conversation that Delena had on the phone:
Elena: I mean maybe, if you and I had met first.
Damon: Maybe.
-FLASHBACK-
They DID meet first! And he wished for her to get everything she wants. And then he compelled her to forget that she met him.*ugly sobbing*
Elena becomes a vampire: She is going to remember everything she’s been compelled to forget. So now she’ll remember that she met Damon first and that he was actually a good person from the start and she’ll remember the 2x08 scene. This is why I’m optimistic about Delena, I think it’s going to change how Elena sees Damon and it might also make her change her decision.
There’s SO much more I want to write but I can’t right now, so many feelings… I just need to calm down for a while and maybe give it another try later.
All in all; this was a heartbreaking episode.
“Matt is taking me home” “To Stefan”…but she didn’t make it. And she died. Because Stefan isn’t home, Damon is.
